Grading

  • Gradings are carried out four times a year and at various locations, please see the SSKA calender for exact details.
  • Students must have trained for 80% of lessons in-between gradings to qualify for grading acceptance.

Dojo Rules for The John Bentley School

  • The outer door will be locked during lessons, anyone arriving late is to knock at the side window.
  • No one, parent or student, is to enter the gymnasium wearing shoes, please remove all footwear before entering.
  • All bags, shoes, coats etc are to be left in the outer changing room.
  • Do not climb on, or use, the wall bars, benches, mats or any other apparatus in the gymnasium.
  • Anyone found damaging school property will be immediately dismissed from the club.
  • In the event of a fire use the gymnasium fire exit, the entrance door is locked during training sessions.

Dojo Etiquette (to be observed wherever you train)

  • Address all instructors as Sensei; use it as a sign of acknowledgement and respect.
  • Make sure you always pay respect to higher grades.
  • Treat visiting Karateka with the respect and good manners you would expect if a visitor.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes before the lesson starts.
  • Always treat your dojo with respect by bowing upon entering and leaving.
  • If you arrive late and the class has started, enter the dojo and bow, kneel at the head of the dojo and wait to be called on by the Sensei.
  • Immediately after paying your money and/or entering the dojo, line up and start to stretch ready for the lesson, do not run around.
  • No changing in the dojo.
  • Always make sure your Gi is clean.
  • Ladies are to wear a white T-shirt under their Gi.
  • No jewellery is to be worn during training; rings that cannot be removed must be taped over.
  • Ensure you have short clean finger/toe nails.
  • Long hair must be tied back.
  • No foul language must be used in the dojo.
  • Do not talk, chew gum or spit in the dojo.
  • NEVER allow yourself or those around you to act in a manner that would bring shame to your dojo.
